Minnesota License Plates

As early as 1903, Minnesota authorized state boiler inspectors to register motor vehicles. The license number was painted on the automobile and the vehicle owner can choose to license vehicle with the state or local cities. In 1905, the state was the only government body to register automobiles. Minnesota issued its first license plate in 1909.

The first slogan appeared on Minnesota license plates in 1949: 1849-centennial-1949 was embossed/stamped on the bottom of license plates to celebrate 100 years of statehood. In 1950, the slogan 10,000 LAKES was embossed/stamped on the license plates and this continues today. In 1987, the word EXPLORE was screen on to top left of Minnesota license plates and still appears.

The 1978 graphic was a lake scene with a canoe being paddled. The outline of a map of the state of Minnesota separated numbers from letters. The basic layout of the 1978 graphic appears on all Minnesota non-special interest license plates today. Prior to 1979, all Minnesota license plates were very standard with practical designs for easy recognition by law enforcement.

The 1912 through 1914 license plate issues were unusual, the year was embossed but unpainted while all the other embossed numbers were painted black. The 1949 plate issued by Minnesota was made of waffle Aluminum. Waffles made thin aluminum stronger. All license plates issued by Minnesota were dated with the year. Minnesota issued its only porcelain license plate in 1909. Minnesota issued its first retro-reflective license plate in 1956. Today, Minnesota’s license plates are digitally printed with an embossed/stamped border, but the license plate number is flat (non-embossed/non-stamped).

After the purchase of my Alpina, I noticed that the car was different from all her BMW E38 siblings in North America by having the European trunk lid on it, preventing me from using a US format license plate.I decided, upon reviewing Licenseplates.tv's reputation to use their product on my car and it is absolutely gorgeous. Very clear print on the blue bar, great reflective pain and nicely done lettering.I am definitely most satisfied with my purchase and recommend Licenseplates.tv to anyone wanting a authentically reproduced quality product!

I received the 1947 OREGON STATE LICENSE PLATE--EMBOSSED WITH MY CUSTOM NUMBER BY PRIORITY MAIL ON THURSDAY, MARCH 25th, I am impressed beyond words, looking atthe plate is like being transported back in time to see my late father's 1947 Black Buick RoadMaster, White topped Convertible that had the 380-497 plate, the car was stolen in Portland, and wound up on blocks in a field in Texas, it was beyond recovery, never saw it after that.As I e-mailed earlier, I will be ordering 2 more plates, possibly on Friday March 26th or Monday March 29th. My son will be helping with the ordering, he is more familiar with theprocess of using the computer.

Casey H - New Smyrna Beach, Florida

I just ordered from your company and I must say I am very very impressed with the over quality and look of your English plates. I had ordered one from another company a while back and since I received yours, there is no comparison. I ordered an English plate and it came with German font! I'm very glad to have come across your website in a search. This is the only site I will use from now on and will be a frequent customer. All my future orders will be through you guys and I recommended all my friends to you who use Euro plates.Kind regards,CaseyFlorida
